FAQ
Any company that claims to be environmentally friendly should hire an environmental consultant to conduct an environmental assessment to back these claims. In Layman’s terms, this means completing a full break down of the environmental ethicacy and efficacy of operations. Full transparency and clearly weighing the environmental benefits against impacts. There’s a lot to take into consideration when comparing the ethics between and behind resources. It’s important to ask questions and look closely, when purchasing something for its “eco-credentials”. Simply saying ecofriendly or plant based, does not always ensure it is exactly that. We provide this FAQ for this purpose❤.
Why soy wax?
These days, consumers are becoming more and more environmentally conscious (which is amazing, it’s so great to see people caring about our planet). Due to this, soy wax is trending among candle makers. It’s marketed as a toxin free, sustainable, renewable natural resource, not reliant on the fossil fuel industry.
Main Benefits:
-
Soy wax is plant based, it comes from crops of soybeans. In comparison, paraffin wax candles are abundant, inexpensive, frequently don’t disclose composition and are derived from petroleum (refined gasoline product). Soy receives major bonus points for not supporting the fossil fuel industry.
-
Soy wax is completely biodegradable and easily cleans up when spilled.
-
Soy is a renewable and abundant resource. Our soy farm supplier is located here in Canada.
-
Burns clean with zero petroleum based soot.
-
Lower melting point than paraffin wax, resulting in a longer burn time.
-
Vegan, while other waxes likes bees wax, are not. Our soy is also not tested on animals.
However, there are negatives to look out for...
Misleading Labels
The phrase 100% soy wax can be misleading. Utilizing pure soy wax but then combining it with UV stabilizers, chemicals to enhance scent throw, bleaches and dyes... means that it is no longer 100% soy wax. Many candle makers do not recognize this. It’s always good to clarify. Our candles are 100% soy wax combined with essential oils and quality fragrances.
Supply Source & Composition
Soy grown on a very large mass scale (as with pretty much anything done en masse) has a multitude of negative environmental and socio-economic impacts (habitat loss, deforestation, etc). Simply being plant based, does not guarantee environmental benefits. The impact of using the same resource supplied from one source, is entirely different if you procure it from somewhere else.
From the land on which the soy is harvested, to the growing conditions or impacts associated with importation and distance travelled. A product and the material/process/conditions under which it is made, are entirely different things. Natural and organic are also two different things. Does this mean that soy is inherently NOT environmentally friendly? Absolutely not. What it means is that quality environmentally friendly soy wax is not the least expensive or most abundant “natural soy” option available. The majority of soy wax available in Canada is still imported and has devastating impacts to the environment. For example, soy production in Brazil is greatly contributing to the deforestation of the Amazon rain forest.
We only use organic, not genetically modified soy crops from local Canadian farmers producing soy on a much smaller scale. Source is the most important question you can ask when determining soy quality and ethicacy❤.
